Have you heard of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women? (Okay, that’s a little unwieldy and apparently, they thought so too because they shortened it to UN Women.) Now in its fifth year, UN Women holds their yearly Empowering Women Summit that is blazing a trail of hope for women around the world. I highly recommend that you check them out!
At this year’s summit, a new twist was added. Before the talks and panel discussions got started, guests were treated to a fab fashion show featuring supermodels Ashley Graham and Candice Huffine among others; bloggers GabiFresh and Nicolette Mason and a host of celebrities, including Amber Riley (Glee, Dancing with the Stars) and Danielle Brooks of “Orange is the New Black,” and Broadway’s “The Color Purple.”
The runway extravaganza showcased designs by young fashion icon Christian Siriano, who teamed up with Lane Bryant and Glamour to make it all happen. Stage and screen star Danielle Brooks was Siriano’s muse for his new collection and she was just thrilled with this latest accolade.
“My 15-year-old self is leaping for joy,” said Brooks who also said that she got to a place of self-acceptance by telling herself that she was beautiful until she believed it.
Here are few pics from the show, which was a dazzling success!
At one of the panel discussions Glamour Magazine’s editor-in-chief Cindi Leive talked about a survey they commissioned which found that 54% of women are unhappy with their bodies. That’s not news to theStitch.com[unity] but we’re all in this together in encouraging women to #EYOB!
